Hello and welcome to Cardiff University.
Your Students’ Union here in Cardiff is the biggest and the best in the UK, and we want you to help us keep it that way! The Union offers a vast range of opportunities for fun and personal development and I’ll briefly outline a few:
You can join one of our 60 sports clubs or some of our 140 societies. You can contribute in student-media by writing in the Gair Rhydd, DJ-ing for Xpress Radio or contributing to CUTV, as often as it suits you. You can also build your CV by taking a course in our Student Development Unit, with courses ranging from leadership to first aid.
The Union is aware that many of you will be looking for part-time or casual jobs, so be sure to sign-up with our Jobshop, as we find thousands of students work throughout Cardiff.
The Union is run by you and for you, and we are very proud that we have thousands of you voting in our elections and attending our AGM. It is through you doing this that you can build and shape your Union.
Should any of you encounter personal difficulties in your time here, your Union has a team of well-trained welfare advisors (in the Advice and Representation Centre) to counsel and help you through any problems that you have.
Finally, I might add that the Union should be the first place you think of for all your eating, drinking and clubbing needs. Be sure to grab lunch in The Kitchen, have a drink with your new mates in the Taf and end the night in Solus – our 1900 capacity nightclub with four club nights a week.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, and I hope that your time in Cardiff will be the most memorable years of your life.
