Postgrad Life

If you are beginning postgraduate study, then you certainly aren’t alone. There are nearly 6,000 postgrads at Cardiff. As a postgraduate student, you may be doing a taught or a research degree, part-time or full-time. You may be new to Cardiff or continuing your studies at the University. What is certain is that your style of study will be different from your undergraduate degree and that your degree will probably require year-round working. That’s why the Graduate Centre exists. It is designed to support you in both your studies and your social life.

The Graduate Centre

The Graduate Centre, a dedicated facility for postgraduate students and staff, is a partnership between the Students’ Union and the University. Located on the third floor of the Union Building, it is open seven days a week until midnight year-round and is open most bank holidays. Staff are available throughout opening hours to provide assistance and information.

The Graduate Centre has a lounge with daily newspapers and eight networked computers for emailing and web surfing. There is a Reading Room as well as a Computer Room that has 35 networked computers, colour and black/white printing, scanners, and fax service. Two meeting rooms are available for students to book, free of charge, for seminars, group projects or revision. The Centre offers wireless access to the University’s computer network throughout, with the sole exception of the Reading Room where laptops are currently prohibited.

The Graduate Centre organises social events, such as film nights and coach trips, as well as training programmes for taught and research students. These give you an opportunity to socialise with others on your programme and perhaps more importantly give you a chance to meet postgrads from other programmes. Postgrad students are part of the Centre’s steering group and volunteers are recruited each year – contact us if you’re interested.

The Post Grad Society

The Post Grad Society is run by and for postgrads, organising regular social events throughout the year for postgraduate students such as parties and an “Open Mic” nights. You can join the Society at the Societies Fayre during enrolment week, or at any event.

In addition, the Union has student officers who can represent your views, within both the Union and the University, and help you get the most out of your time at Cardiff. They are supported by a non-sabbatical Postgraduate Support Officer who will be elected in October 2009. To arrange to see any of them simply visit the sabbatical area on the third floor of the Union.
