Societies are a fantastic way to meet people and can provide relief from all that hard studying. They range from the departmental societies (such as the Law Society), to recreational (the Live Music Society, for instance), religious (the Islamic Society is one of Cardiff’s finest societies), political (for all you future leaders, all main parties are represented), international (a great way to get in touch with the Malaysian community in Wales for example) and volunteering societies (our RAG Society raises thousands of pounds each year for charity). Whatever society you join you are guaranteed an introduction to a whole new circle of friends, interests and places to socialise in Cardiff!
A number of societies enter football, netball and rugby teams and play in the IMG league on a Wednesday afternoon, putting a competitive edge on being in a society.
The Union holds a Societies Fayre in Freshers’ Fortnight, where you will have the opportunity to join whatever society takes your fancy. Or if you’re keen to join now, check out our membership section and sign up today!
On the other hand, if you can’t find a society that suits you, then why not start one yourself? Many a first year student has started a society and made it one of the best in their year, so don’t be shy – get in touch with Carys Hazell, the Societies, Events and Activities Officer, who you can find on the third floor of the Union.
