Global Village
Every year the Students’ Union, in conjunction with the international organisation AIESEC, hold an annual charity event called ‘Global Village’. It is an evening where students have the opportunity to promote and celebrate their diverse cultures. All profits made from the event go to a nominated charity. Global Village is an annual event fusing food, fashion, dance and music, highlighting the diverse cultures of our student body.
There are food stalls where students and guests will also have the opportunity to sample the countless dishes provided by each country. Each stall will feature cultural and national delicacies, hot food and beverages. There is also a fashion show which students perform to promote the different styles from each Continent, and the event finishes with dance and musical acts from around the world performed by a number of the students’ union’s societies.
Athletic Union Auction
This event takes place at Rubber Duck on one Wednesday during November. Members of each sport’s team put together a dance routine as celebrity judges grade the teams. There are some events in the Union that once you have been part of you will never forget: this is one of them!
The Athletic Union Awards
The awards night see those who have achieved great things on and off the pitch for University Sports clubs awarded by the Athletic Union. This is a glamorous night where sports people and teams wait on the edge of their seat to see whether a year’s blood sweat and tears representing the University has been recognised.
Media Awards
The Cardiff Student Media Awards is an annual event where we recognise the talent, creativity and expertise of the volunteers that have been involved in student media throughout that year.
gair rhydd, Quench, Xpress Radio, CUTV, the Film Society and the Photographic Society come together at a prestigious venue, usually the Cardiff Hilton Hotel, for a drinks reception, a three-course meal and an award ceremony presented by a worthy host. Past compares include Newsround’s Lizo Mzimba, BBC Wales’ Jamie Owen and Radio One’s Bethan and Huw.
Industry-leading journalists judge the 20 plus categories and we are fortunate enough to have the likes of Channel 4’s Jon Snow, Guardian columnist Charlie Brooker and GQ Magazine editor Dylan Jones looking at students’ work. Not only do winners receive trophies, but they also get constructive feedback from these high-profile judges which will help their future journalist careers.
Societies’ Awards
This year was the biggest and best in terms of size and scale for the societies awards. The Big Band and Jazz societies played live at the event, and the evening concluded with a DJ set till midnight. Awards categories included best president, best society, and most popular society, with over 40 nominees in total.
